Canon Cameras

canon elph camera. if i delete a photo from the camera, will it still be stored on the sim card?

I tried this before on a different camera and when I hooked it up to my computer, the deleted photos were still coming up. What do you do to permanently remove them?

  1. The answer is yes and no. When you delete a file off a memory card, the camera will erase the pointer to the file, much like erasing a chapter from the table of contents for a book. The chapter may still be in the book, but if it's not listed in the table of contents, a reader can't find it. So, in that sense, the file is gone. However, digital recovery software can recover the file, much like a reader can find a chapter in a book by simply flipping pages until you see the missing chapter. So, the deleted file could in theory be recovered unless overwritten.
  2. If you delete images on the memory card (SIMs are used in cell phones) using the delete feature, you may run the risk of corrupting all the image files. The best practice would be to have two nice large memory cards (1GB or 2GB) and after you have moved the images from your memory card (using a card reader (under $15 if your computer doesn't have one already). Then delete them from the computers hard drive. To permanently remove them from your card, use the format feature on your camera. It will refresh your card and write a new image index file and will prevent any image corruption as you take more shots with the camera
