I need a lens for my Canon EOS 40D?
Hey, I recently bought a Canon EOS 40D and I'm new to DSLR's. I need a new lens for my camera and I want the best possible lens I can get, price doesnt matter. I will be taking mostly family and basic pictures, no big scenery or anyhting like that. Thanks for your time.

- Walmart! Best stop ever to get all your cammeraa needs!
- If I could have one and only one lens for my Canon it would be the Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS. It is a fabulous general purpose lens.
- Canon makes very good quality lenses, better than any of the third-party manufacturers (Tamron, Sigma, etc.) in my opinion. I think a good first lens (after the one that came with the camera) is a moderate telephoto. Take a look at a 85 mm or 100mm fixed lens. When you're shooting family and friends, these lenses will get you in a bit closer and make your compositions a little tighter. They also flatten perspective a bit, which is flattering to most people's features. Fixed lenses like the ones above are always the sharpest, but if you want a good zoom for more flexibility, try the 70-200mm. Between it and your regular lenses, you'll cover 99% of the photos you'll want to take. Here's a site that has user ratings of Canon EOS lenses: http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/reviews/best_canon_eos_lenses.html Good luck and good shooting!
- We own Canon cameras and buy most of our lenses and accessories from www.ritzcamera.com or www.adorama.com. Adorama is a smaller store in New York (if I remember correctly). They are very knowledgeable and have been very helpful with any questions we've had. They have their phone number on their web site so you can call and talk to them personally. They're a great store. Ritz Camera is good also, but they are a little pricey.
- I agree about the 24-105 L lens.. it's amazing.

(October 2007-$515) is a good "walk around" lens at a good price. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=149&modelid=10511 http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-S-17-85mm-f-4-5.6-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx Not quite as much of a wide angle, the Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Autofocus Lens (2007-$1,060) is a pretty good all-around lens. This review says, "If I had only one lens, this would be the one," but I think he is using it on a 35 mm camera. http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-24-105mm-f-4-L-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx Excellent general purpose lens: Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Autofocus Lens (April 2007-$1,140) http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-24-70mm-f-2.8-L-USM-Lens-Review.aspx I really like my Nikon 17-55 and Canon makes a comparable lens, the Canon Zoom Super Wide Angle EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Autofocus Lens. It's not an "L" lens, but it seems popular. I just read in PopPhoto (November 2007) that the only reason this is not designated an "L" lens is beacuse it will not work with the full format sensors. http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/reviews/ef-s_17-55.html http://www.popphoto.com/inpopularphotography/4617/current-issue-november-2007.html
