  1. I just looked at the Rakuten Online Electronics Shop (www.rakuten.com) In Japan the Canon EOS 400D is know as.... The Canon EOS Kiss Digital X!!! It's a great camera and I just saw it at LAOX (a electronics store) for 60,000. You maybe able to find it cheaper in Akihabara or Shibuya. Please note: A lot of Digital cameras sold in Japan have Japanese ONLY on the cameras menus with no international settings. (that is it can't be translated into English). PS: The Kanji for English is: 英語=えいご=eigo So if you see that in the description it means the menu can be translated.
  2. If you are in the US or Canada it will almost always be cheaper to buy it in the US than anywhere else in the world, especially since the US dollar is very weak now. Japanese cameras are (ironically) very expensive in Japan compared to most other countries. For example, the 400D w/kit lens is $589 at B&H Photo but about $680 in Tokyo at the current exchange rate. Don't forget most cameras sold in Japan come with Japan-only warranties, Japanese-only instruction manuals, and in some cases the camera buttons and menus will be in Japanese only as well. You can find a good deal on used, older cameras (especially manual focus lenses and medium/large format film gear) in Tokyo though.
